Carole Olsen Has Lived Through a Thing or Two
Writer profile #29 in my 30 day reading challenge
One of the unexpected blessings for me of finding this reading and writing community has been a window into the world of people both alongside, ahead of, and behind me in the chronological stages of life. I find myself functioning at my best when I’m fully grounded in the past, present, and future.
Carole Olsen is a couple of decades ahead of me and I feel lucky to be able to add her to the list of women I want to learn from. She writes with directness and humor and I want to be like her when I grow up, which is to say ageless and full of life even if my body is no longer youthful.
Here are some of my favorites:
Roberta is a history buff. We live in Richmond, Virginia, which has endless Civil War history. When she said to my friend Shirley and me that she wanted to find the grave of Stonewall Jackson’s left arm, we both looked at her like she was a little off.
“You mean Stonewall Jackson’s Grave?” I said.
