I agree with you. In this case I think a large part of the problem is people who have bought in to the lie that Covid isn’t really a big deal. You are absolutely right that the church does believe in science. Do your homework and accept the consequences if you are going to decide that your gut call matters more than the theologians and church ethicists who have spend their entire lives studying these issues as well at the medical experts who have done the same in their field.
