I have had this exact same experience traveling fro the UK to the US during the pandemic.

The airport in America is not quite what I was expecting. I am convinced it is the most crowded I have seen any airport, ever. Everywhere I turn there are people.

I have had this exact same experience traveling fro the UK to the US during the pandemic. Empty lovely transatlantic flight followed by insanely busy and scary US airports.
