I lived in the Philippines in the 70's as a child. My dad was a missionary working in the garbage dumps of Manila. You are spot on about this. A little bit of money makes a huge difference to those in poverty but not much different once you are middle class. This whole article is an excellent reminder of basic happiness principles it's easy to forget.
