I so emphathize with this. When I moved to Japan with my family for six years several years ago I was determined to learn Japanese. I used Anki to learn kanji. I tried to self teach myself and failed miserably. My kids picked up more even with attending American schools.

I think you need to be willing to speak a language to really learn it and that's where I fell down.
