I've experienced the book/stage/screen trifecta. If I was the ranking them in terms of works of art I'd go screen, stage, book and I don't need to hesitate a second to make the ranking. But the three are so different from each other. I think its best to consider them completely separate pieces drawing from the same source material. I rarely say this but this is one movie where if you loved it, you probably don't want to read the book, it's quite dark.
