“Giving compliments is arguably better than receiving them, just as giving gifts or contributing to charity has benefits to the giver,” he says.

“By giving compliments you can make interactions more enjoyable, bring out reciprocating warmth from others, and create a favourable impression in their eyes.” — Professor Nick Haslam, School of Psychological Sciences, University of Melbourne for HuffPost Australia.

I’m going to start giving out more compliments. After all, I love receiving them so why shouldn’t I be giving them?

I’ve been intentional in doling out the compliments online ever since I started posting my writing. It’s easy and second nature to me now to brighten a fellow writer’s day with a positive note.

But giving compliments in person? That takes a bit more effort.

When I first had the idea for this habit I thought, I can’t do that. Due to Covid there are days I don’t talk to anyone in person other than my spouse and my college-aged daughter stuck here taking online classes.

Yes, I do realize how stupid that sounds once I say it out loud. Who is more deserving of hearing praise from me than my nearest and dearest?
