My Choices Matter, but I Keep Forgetting to Tell Myself

Reflecting on habit #13 in my 30-day journey

Choosing a personal motto and repeating it to yourself throughout the day will keep you grounded and focused on your goals. The theory is sound but I found my implementation weak.

“My choices matter” is the motto I picked to repeat regularly to myself throughout the day as one of my habits midway through my 30-day habit journey. My motto was excellent. My memory was seriously flawed.

I did repeat this motto to myself daily — whenever I happened to look at my habits spreadsheet. Not once in the month did I think of my motto spontaneously during the day.

In retrospect, I should have written my motto on post-it notes and stuck it up all over the house. Maybe I should have cross-stitched it on a pillow or stenciled it on the wall. My landlord might have objected but what does he know.

I’m a pretty introspective person. I am constantly ruminating over my values and actions so I don’t need a motto like this. I try to remind myself of my priorities regularly anyway.

I’m dropping this habit bringing me to 10 out of 13 for lasting habits.
