My favorite stories are the ones which practically write themselves. They flow from my fingertips from beginning to end. It's happened a half a dozen times, at the most. Even those I leave to age coming back later to push and poke, add and subtract before publishing. Most stories come exactly the way you suggest in chunks of writing and then refining.
