When one reads and writes an excessive amount online — I’m pointing the finger directly at myself here — you get a gut feeling for writers who have what it takes to grow a following. It would be a fun project, ideally for someone other than me who keeps distracting herself from important tasks with yet another fun project, for the semi-seasoned writers among us to keep personal prediction lists.
You stumble upon a writer and maybe they haven’t got all the quirky little norms of writing here polished up but you see strong potential. If this person is persistent and keeps writing regularly they will see success eventually.
My definition of success is they will write things many people will read and appreciate, which is the best kind of success to aim for in my humble opinion. Nothing wrong with aiming for the money but it is so easy to get discouraged in a profitability pursuit and give up too quickly. Aim at growing an audience and in time the money will follow.
The sad news is so many potentially powerful writers give up when they don’t see quick success. This is a long game here, people.
