Thanks for sharing your story. This kind of thing is so hard to see. When we brought my brother home to die with hospice someone quickly turned the TV to Fox News to "make him happy." Fox News is why I rarely communicated with him in his final years of life.

I would argue that you can be just scared and a small-minded racist at the same time. Understanding where racist ideas come from and why they appeal to people is important but it doesn't excuse them.

I'm so sorry you are facing this with your mom. It's hard.
