The Joy of Zoom Church with Senior Citizens
You never know what might happen next
The vicar ends the pre-service chatting each week with the now familiar, “Okay, it’s time to start. Everyone, please put yourself on mute.”
Most of the thirty-odd or so of us gathered together in His name dutifully mute ourselves but there are always one or two that forget, fail to do it properly, or still haven’t really figured out what mute means.
Everything rolls along fine until the first hymn when suddenly the unmuted person finds themselves singing an unintended solo for everyone to hear. If they are tech-savvy enough to read the private messages sent their way pointing this out, their voice will drop out mid-song. Else all of us who have appropriately muted ourselves have a nice private chuckle while listening to them sing along with the recorded hymn.
As the power point slide comes up indicating that it is time for the sermon we wait for the vicar to begin. And we wait. At first we assume he is collecting his thoughts. Maybe taking time for a brief silent prayer for inspiration. We look more closing at his photo. Are his lips moving?
Someone unmutes themselves. “Vicar, you are still on mute.”
“Oops, sorry about that. I didn’t want to inflict my singing on you all.”
