This was a fun read and spot on. I think you are correct that self publishing without a large following was your main downfall. There are publications where I think this topic would do very well.

Also I would remove the reference to Medium in the second sentence. This makes the story ineligible for distribution which is especially problematic for a self published piece. The sentence is stronger without it anyway. Just say, Many readers are...
