You are Not the Best Judge of Your Own Writing
Write a lot, submit a lot, and let editors and fate determine the success of any given piece
Does this ever happen to you?
You are pouring your energy into a piece that has it all. It is perfect for a certain publication. The topic matter is popular and your twist is original. You take your time polishing it because this is the one that’s going to go viral.
Meanwhile, you write a bit of fluff inspired by a random photo that jumped out at you while searching for the perfect illustration for your masterpiece. This one you dashed off with nary a thought as to what you would do with it when done. You’re just playing around, having fun.
Should I bother submitting this anywhere? you ask yourself. What do I have you lose you figure and send it off to a popular publication.
You submit your masterpiece and wait. “Thanks, but we’ll pass on this one. Please send something else our way.” You get it accepted somewhere else but it never really takes off.
Your fluff piece, on the other hand, earns a “What a delightful story. We would love to have it in our publication.” It goes on to be a nice little earner for you.
What the what?
